What is anxiety?

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States, affecting 40 million Americans. An anxiety disorder is a type of mental health disorder that can cause feelings to become overwhelming and interfere with daily life. Furthermore, people with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. There are different types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, and phobia anxiety. For people struggling with these mental health conditions, days can be challenging, filled with avoidance and fear.

What Does Anxiety Look Like?

Anxiety may look different for different people. Some people with anxiety may appear to be very calm, while others may look very agitated. People show symptoms of anxiety in a number of ways. Some become talkative, while someone else may withdraw from the group or isolate themself. Even seemingly outgoing, pleasant, or fearless people can have anxiety. Because anxiety has a wide range of symptoms, the manner that it appears for one person is not the same for another.

If you or someone you know may be experiencing anxiety, here are some tips:

What Causes Anxiety?

There is no one answer to this question, as everyone experiences anxiety differently and there can be many different triggers. However, some common causes of anxiety include stress, genetics, and certain medical conditions. Anxiety can also be caused by certain medications or substances, such as caffeine or alcohol. If you are experiencing anxiety, it is important to speak to a doctor or mental health professional to determine the cause, and develop a plan to manage your symptoms.

What Are the Different Kinds of Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are a type of mental health illness that can cause feelings of fear, worry, and unease. While there are various different types of anxiety disorders, the most common include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic disorder.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about a number of different things. People with GAD may feel anxious about their health, work, finances, or family.

Symptoms of GAD include feeling restless or on edge, being easily fatigued, having difficulty concentrating, having irritability, muscle tension, and sleep problems. GAD can interfere with a person’s ability to function at work or school and can cause relationship difficulties.

Because treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) varies depending on a person’s unique situation it is recommended to connect with a licensed therapist to create an effective treatment plan.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that lead to compulsive behaviors. OCD affects people of all ages, but is most commonly diagnosed in adolescence or young adulthood.

Symptoms of OCD can include:

• Excessive hand-washing or cleaning

• Repeating certain actions over and over

• Arranging objects in a precise order

• Counting or tapping in a specific pattern

• Hoarding objects

Treatments and therapies for OCD vary and it is recommended you speak to a licensed therapist to build a custom OCD Treatment Plan

Panic Disorder

People with panic disorder experience regular and unexpected panic attacks. These can be extremely frightening and cause physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, and dizziness.

Panic disorder is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is often treated with medication and therapy.

If you or someone you know experiences regular panic attacks, it is important to seek professional help. Panic disorder can be a debilitating condition, but it is treatable with the right plan in place and with help from a mental health professional.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, because the best therapy for anxiety will always vary depending on the individual and the severity of their anxiety. Some common treatments for anxiety include:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT),

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that is used to treat anxiety by changing the thinking and behavior patterns of patients. According to the national institute of mental health cognitive-behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, and eating disorders.

CBT works by helping people identify and challenge their negative thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. Through this process, people learn to develop more positive thinking and behavior patterns.
